Since the brand's inception, Fiorucci has supported new and up-and-coming talent by giving them a platform to express themselves and their individuality.
These talents include the likes of Madonna, Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, who are now true icons. They came into the spotlight at Fiorucci’s iconic LA concept store in the 70’s, where the Fiorucci Angels inhabited the City of Angels. One memorable individual who became part of the Fiorucci family is Rod Stewart, who was photographed in his Fiorucci star arch logo tee by David Montgomery in 1975, an image which has become recognisable worldwide.
Drawing inspiration from this, we invited 6 talented creatives based in Los Angeles, to chat to us about what LA means to them, their experiences of Fiorucci and who their own Hollywood Angels are. It seemed only right to turn to Max Montgomery, David’s son, to capture these talents and future icons.
Meet Fiorucci’s Hollywood Angels.
BABYJAKE
Jake Herring is the name of the artist who records as BabyJake. Growing up in Fort Meyers, Florida, Jake first picked up the guitar when he was eight years old. Herring debuted as BabyJake in 2019, with his single 'Cigarettes on Patios,’ which has accumulated over 35 million streams to date. Before too long, he had his first official body of work, which quickly evolved into a multifaceted career that currently involves a record label called daycare, with an added streetwear line. His seven-song debut EP, 'Don’t give me problems, give me wine' feels like the result of an artist older than his years, someone who has lived recklessly and is ready to put it all on record.
"The special feeling of LA comes from the people in it. Everyone is a creative, everyone wants to make something special and new and cool. Most people even want to help one another. I’d say that’s what makes it special...”
"My favourite Fiorucci piece would be a tie breaker between the black trousers & the white button-down Angels shirt. I really love the 70’s so those two pieces really stuck out to me.”
KACY HILL
Kacy Hill is a Phoenix born, Los Angeles based singer-songwriter. Kacy went viral in 2014 with her self-released single ‘Experience’. After being on the road with Kanye West for the Yeezus tour, she found herself signed to G.O.O.D. Music. In 2019, Kacy ended her deal with the label, she says cutting ties led her to soul searching through her music. In December of 2017, Hill connected with producer BJ Burton in Minneapolis, where they started laying the foundations of what would become Hill’s new record, 'Is It Selfish If We Talk About Me Again’. Out of the major label system, Hill has found her true voice. Kacy is releasing her new album this spring/summer.
"I love that LA can be whatever you want it to be. It’s huge and spread out with tons of different neighbourhoods, so there’s something for everybody.”
"I wasn’t really interested in fashion or much pop culture growing up in Arizona, so my introduction to the fashion world came after I moved to LA when I was 18. I remember wandering through Opening Ceremony on La Cienega (RIP) and falling in love with a pair of Fiorucci jeans.”
BLANDA
Blanda is an artist living in LA. Blanda was Art Director at the New York Times at the age of 26, but was always more interested in art, and after her time in New York she moved to Los Angeles where she went freelance to concentrate on her own work. Blanda seamlessly navigates the worlds of print, fashion and drawing, bringing her signature feminine yet minimalist aesthetic to all of her endeavours.
“My first experience of Fiorucci was Ca 1998, a pink winged perfume bottle that smelled like bubble gum and falling in love for the first time. I’m still kind of in love with the Fiorucci perfume of my teenage dreams…”
CARTER ACE
Carter Ace is a singer, rapper, and producer from Los Angeles, California. His music combines various genres such as R&B, pop, rap, and elements of jazz. Carter Ace first got into music at a very young age, where he mainly listened to African and salsa music, before being introduced to hip hop in middle school, which shaped the music he makes today. His latest single ‘Frozen’ is out now.
“Grace Jones is my Hollywood Angel. She is a confident, androgynous, dark-skinned icon like I inspire to be.”
"The Angels bandana scarf is my favourite Fiorucci garment by far. I need that tied around my dreads at all times from here on out.”
JULIETTA LUNAROSE
Reinvention and self-discovery is the inspiration behind the upcoming EP from New York born dream-pop artist Julietta. Born and raised on the east coast, Julietta left friends and family behind to find herself on the other side of the country in Los Angeles. This newfound freedom of self-worth and independence has boiled down to five ethereal gems that will make up the Levitate EP, out on all platforms this February.
"LA to me represents freedom. Freedom to be who I want to be. Freedom to express myself as I want to. Freedom to explore natures beauty while also feeding off the beat of a vibrant city. Los Angeles has gifted me the space to grow, and for that I’m most grateful!”
"When I was a little girl my friends introduced me to Fiorucci in an Italian town called Forte Dei Marmi. All the girls wore the Angels on their shirts and jeans shorts, it was like being part of a club. I begged my parents to get me an outfit so I could be part of it. When I see those Angels now, they remind me of falling in love with summers in Italy."
BEAU
NYC-born alt pop duo Beau, consisting of singer/songwriters Heather Goldin and Emma Jenney, make dreamy indie pop that straddles the line between atmospheric '60s folk and frenetic late '70s punk. Heather and Emma grew up children of painters in Greenwich Village and became fast friends at a young age. Originally calling themselves 'The Boos' and playing gigs around NYC. A trip to France inspired a name change to Beau (the masculine term for beautiful in French) and the rest is history. The duo is now promoting new music, recorded at the iconic Electric Lady Studios.
“Our favourite Fiorucci items would have to be the Angels turtleneck and sweat pants, but we love pretty much everything Fiorucci makes.”
